Description

This is a great condition 98/05 bayonet with a particular nice blade that started out as a sawback bayonet. Sawback bayonets were withdrawn from front line service in 1917 and many like this one had the sawback removed. The maker on the blade reads “WAFFEN FABRIK MAUSER A.G. OBERNDORF A.N.” and on the spine of the blade we see a “W” under a crown, followed by the date 1916 and an acceptance stamp at the bottom.

The wooden grips are in great condition with only some minor wear to one side and are held in place by two screw bolts. The rifle retaining button works perfectly and there is an acceptance stamp to the rear of the upper pommel where we normally see them.

The scabbard is in great shape and fits the blade perfectly. It is also nicely maker marked to the same manufacturer that’s stamped on the blade. We don’t always see scabbards that are maker marked so this is a bonus and it also tells us the bayonet and scabbard have always lived together.

A very nice bayonet.
