Description

A genuine First World War German Model 98/05 bayonet which began life as a sawback example and was later modified with the sawback removed. Sawback bayonets were withdrawn from front-line service during the war, and many examples were altered in this manner to remain in use.

This is a solid, honest bayonet showing correct wartime manufacture and service wear, with no attempts made to disguise its history.

Blade
Full-length steel blade retaining a strong, clean profile. The blade is maker marked WAFFEN FABRIK MAUSER A.G. OBERNDORF A.N.. To the spine is a crowned W, followed by the date 1916, with an acceptance stamp present toward the base, all correctly struck and consistent with wartime production.

The sawback has been cleanly removed, as commonly encountered on period-modified examples. The blade shows light age toning and honest wear, with no evidence of later grinding beyond the wartime alteration.

Hilt & Grips
Wooden grip scales are in very good condition, showing only minor handling wear, and are secured by correct screw bolts. The rifle retaining button functions correctly. An acceptance stamp is present to the rear of the upper pommel, in the expected position.

Scabbard
Original steel scabbard in very good condition, remaining straight and undented. The scabbard fits the blade well and is maker marked to the same manufacturer as the bayonet. While matching scabbards are not guaranteed, this pairing is entirely correct and desirable.

Overall
A very good example of a WWI German 98/05 bayonet with documented wartime modification. An honest, service-used piece by a major Imperial German manufacturer, offering both historical interest and strong display appeal.
