Description
This is an original WW1 British Army prismatic compass, clearly dated 1918 and bearing the broad arrow mark, denoting official War Department issue. A classic and highly collectable piece of military field equipment, these compasses were essential tools for navigation, artillery work, and general field use during the First World War.
Constructed in brass, the compass retains its full prismatic sighting system, hinged lid with sight vane, and rotating bezel, allowing accurate bearings to be taken while observing a target. The dial remains clean and readable, and the instrument is fully functional, operating exactly as it should. It has clearly seen service, but everything about it feels right in hand — a well-used but properly cared-for example that hasn’t been over-cleaned or tampered with.
One of the standout features of this piece is the surface wear. The brass has developed a rich, even patina with genuinely attractive handling marks throughout, giving it a fantastic, honest look that collectors actively seek out. It’s the sort of wear that only comes from real use over time, and it displays beautifully.
The compass is accompanied by its original leather carrying case, which is itself dated 1918. It remains structurally sound with good stitching and clear stamping, though it does show age and use. The securing strap, commonly found on these cases, is no longer present, which is worth noting, but the case still displays very well and pairs perfectly with the compass.
A strong, complete and very displayable WW1 example with excellent character and undeniable authenticity. As you can see, it photographs very well with the patina so will look excellent in any WW1 collection.
