Description

An early production Imperial German S98 bayonet, dated 1902, retaining its original single-piece walnut grip construction and desirable regimental markings. This example shows honest service wear throughout and has been shortened at some stage, which is reflected in the condition and pricing, but remains a solid and historically interesting piece from the early adoption period of the S98 pattern.

Blade
The blade remains bright with visible wear consistent with age and use. It has been shortened and now measures approximately 47cm, rather than its original full length. The edge shows signs of use, but the blade still presents well overall.

The spine is clearly marked with a crowned GR (Georg Rex of Saxony) above the date 02 for 1902, along with additional inspection markings. The ricasso is marked to Simson & Co, Suhl, a well-known Imperial German maker.

Hilt & Grips
This example retains the early and desirable single-piece walnut grip, wrapping around the tang and secured by two screw bolts. The grip features the correct nine diagonal grooves for improved handling. There is honest wear present, as expected.

The quillon is bent backwards with a drop-shaped finial, designed to assist with stacking rifles and to protect the hand. The rifle retaining button is present and functions correctly.

Two inspection stamps are visible to the reverse of the hilt.

The crossguard is regimentally marked 107.R.4.17, indicating issue to Infanterie-Regiment 107, 4th Company, weapon number 17.

Scabbard
Original leather scabbard showing age-related wear and creasing throughout. The stitching is mostly intact but with some areas of separation. The lower staple is missing, and there is visible wear to the leather body.

The top mount is matching and also marked 107.R.4.17, confirming a matching regimentally issued set.

The bayonet fits the scabbard with a snug fit at the throat.

Overall
A service used early S98 example with desirable features including the single-piece grip, and matching regimental markings. While the shortened blade and scabbard wear place it below top-tier condition, it remains a collectible and historically significant piece from the early years of Imperial German bayonet development.

Historical Note
The S98 (Seitengewehr 98) was adopted in 1898 alongside the Gewehr 98 rifle, with production beginning in 1899 following earlier trial patterns. Early examples such as this retain features like the single-piece grip construction before later modifications were introduced. Regimentally marked examples offer a direct link to Imperial German infantry units of the pre-First World War era.
