Description

An unusual and highly evocative original WW2 Victoria League wartime sewing and repair kit, retaining its original khaki cloth roll pouch and period contents, and strongly linked to Commonwealth wartime welfare efforts in Durban, South Africa.

The interior remains well preserved and displays beautifully, containing assorted original sewing materials including thread cards, buttons, safety pins, needles and cord, all housed within the stitched folding utility roll. Items of this kind were intended as practical wartime necessities during a period of rationing, austerity and “Make Do And Mend” culture throughout the British Empire and Commonwealth.

The pouch carries a faint wartime ink stamp which I believe reads:

“A GIFT from
Victoria League
346 West Street
Durban”

While parts of the marking are now difficult to make out clearly, this interpretation is supported by the fact that the Victoria League is historically documented as operating wartime welfare activities in Durban during WW2, and West Street was a major and well-known Durban location during the period. The Victoria League was heavily involved in wartime charitable and welfare efforts throughout the British Empire and Commonwealth, making this a particularly interesting and unusual surviving example.

The Victoria League was a major welfare and support organisation active throughout the British Empire and Commonwealth, heavily involved in wartime charitable work, comforts distribution and civilian welfare projects during WW2. Surviving named and address-marked items of this nature are exceptionally uncommon today, particularly those connected to overseas Commonwealth branches.

Condition is good overall for age and type. The khaki cloth pouch remains structurally sound and displays honest age-related wear and handling marks consistent with wartime use and storage. The stamp remains faint in areas but is still readable in hand, and the contents retain a wonderful untouched period appearance. A scarce and extremely atmospheric piece of Commonwealth WW2 social history with excellent Home Front and wartime welfare display appeal.
