Description
An original WW1 German leather frog for the Model 1898/05 “Butcher” bayonet.
Original 98/05 frogs are becoming increasingly difficult to find separately, as many remain fitted to bayonets. This example is of a less commonly encountered variation, featuring a retaining strap which wraps around the bayonet grip. This pattern is not seen very often and makes an interesting addition.
Overall
The leather remains strong and structurally sound throughout, with good shape and honest service wear consistent with age and use. The leather retains a degree of flexibility and has not become brittle.
All stitching remains present and secure. The frog retains all four rivets, although one rivet is missing its outer cap. Importantly, the surrounding leather and stitching remain firm, and this does not affect the overall integrity of the piece.
There is expected period wear throughout, but overall this remains a good, solid example of a World War I German 98/05 bayonet frog.
