Description
A wonderful and increasingly scarce example of a WW1 Home Front patriotic puzzle, this is an original “The Allies” Ring Puzzle No. 2996, complete with its original box, puzzle board, instruction sheet and move chart.
Produced by G. W. & Co. of London during WW1, the puzzle was marketed as “A Very Interesting Present for the Soldier” and proudly states “All British Manufacture” on the box. Intended as an entertaining yet challenging pastime for servicemen, it reflects the patriotic spirit of wartime Britain, when British-made goods and gifts for those serving overseas were actively promoted.
The puzzle itself consists of a painted board fitted with eight numbered steel rings and a removable wire “needle”. The aim is to remove and replace the rings in the correct sequence, with the included instruction sheet explaining the method and the separate move chart providing the complete solution. More than a simple wire puzzle, it is a fascinating period logic game that would have provided hours of entertainment for soldiers on leave, in hospital, or during quieter moments away from the front.
One of the greatest attractions of this example is its completeness. Many surviving puzzles have lost their original packaging or paperwork over the years, whereas this example retains its original printed box, both original instruction sheets and the complete puzzle. The colourful box artwork, featuring the flags of the Allied nations alongside patriotic wartime slogans, makes it an excellent display piece in its own right.
Whether displayed alongside WW1 Home Front memorabilia, patriotic propaganda or military leisure items, this is an unusual and highly collectable piece that offers a fascinating insight into the lighter side of wartime life and the types of gifts purchased for those serving their country.
Condition is very good overall for its age. The original box remains structurally sound with honest edge wear, scuffing and age-related discolouration consistent with over a century of careful storage. The puzzle itself is complete and in excellent order, retaining its original finish with only light signs of age. Both the instruction sheet and move chart are present and fully readable, showing expected folds, age toning and minor handling marks, along with a few old ink marks to the reverse of the move chart. Overall, this is a complete, well-preserved and highly displayable example of a scarce WW1 patriotic soldier’s gift.
