An unusual 1940-dated WWII British Mk II Home Front steel helmet, believed to have been used by factory or company personnel and displaying a particularly distinctive combination of coloured markings to the front.

The helmet remains in an untouched, uncleaned condition and has clearly seen considerable wartime use and subsequent age.

Shell

The steel shell is manufactured by Joseph Sankey & Sons (JSS) and is 1940 dated.

The exterior retains its black painted finish, displaying considerable age-related wear, paint loss, surface corrosion and oxidation throughout.

The front carries a striking combination of period markings, comprising a large yellow lightning flash, faded red painted markings and an elaborate winged insignia picked out in green, red and gold.

The precise company, factory or organisation represented by these unusual markings has not been established, and we have therefore deliberately avoided attributing the helmet to a specific organisation.

Liner

The helmet retains its original-pattern liner, which remains substantially complete but displays considerable age, wear and deterioration.

The manufacturer’s markings are extremely faint but appear to read TTC – Teddy Toy Company Ltd, together with what is believed to be a 1940 date, corresponding with the year of manufacture of the shell.

Chinstrap

The original webbing chinstrap remains present and displays considerable age-related wear and discolouration consistent with the overall condition of the helmet.

Overall

A highly distinctive WWII British Home Front helmet retaining an unusual combination of original coloured markings.

The helmet is certainly not in pristine condition, displaying substantial age-related wear, corrosion and deterioration to the liner. However, it remains in an uncleaned condition, and its heavily worn appearance together with the surviving insignia gives it considerable character.

Although believed to have been associated with factory or company personnel, the precise organisation represented by the winged insignia, lightning flash and red markings remains uncertain.
