Description

The Women’s Land Army (WLA) Timber Corps, also known as the “Lumber Jills,” was formed in 1942 during World War 2 in the U.K. The establishment of the Timber Corps was a response to the increasing demand for timber and wood fuel required for the war effort, particularly for the production of munitions, construction materials, and fuel supplies. With millions of men being conscripted into the armed forces, there was a severe shortage of agricultural labour. The WLA was officially formed in June 1939 and was a civilian organisation, despite working closely with the government and the Ministry of Agriculture. Members of the WLA Timber Corps wore armbands like this one here. They symbolised the important contribution Timber Corps members made to the nation’s wartime needs and this one is in near perfect condition. There’s no fraying to speak of, no holes and despite clearly being worn, it’s in excellent condition. There’s some staining on the back, including a tiny black mark. All the stitching is absolutely perfect without a single one being pulled or dropped.
