Description
A superb example of the Italian Fascist Youth (GIL) Eagle Head Dagger dating from the 1930s–1940s. This is one of the finest examples I have handled, retaining excellent detail throughout and complete with its original leather scabbard.
Blade
The double-edged plated blade remains in near mint condition, retaining a bright finish throughout with an excellent point. The blade displays hardly any age-related marks and remains one of the strongest features of the piece. It would be extremely difficult to improve upon this example from a blade condition standpoint.
Hilt & Grips
The black wooden grip remains in superb condition with only light handling wear visible. The original wire binding is complete and intact, consisting of twisted central wire flanked by straight wire strands within each groove. The detailed eagle-head pommel retains both original red eyes, a feature often found or missing on lesser examples. Feather detailing remains sharp and well defined throughout. The decorative ferrule retains an attractive gilt finish, while the straight brass crossguard remains undamaged.
Scabbard
The dagger is accompanied by its original stitched leather scabbard. An interesting feature is the olive-green finish to the front, brown finish to the reverse, and black belt loop fitting, a combination encountered on original examples of this pattern. The leather displays age-related crazing, particularly to the front surface, together with wear to the tip area. Despite this, the scabbard remains structurally sound with its stitching intact and presents very well.
Overall
An excellent collector-grade example of the Italian Fascist Youth (GIL) dagger. The combination of near mint blade, complete eagle-head pommel with both red eyes present, strong gilt finish, original grip wire, and original scabbard makes this a particularly desirable example. It would be difficult to find a significantly better specimen and it would make an outstanding addition to any collection of Italian Fascist edged weapons.
Historical Note
The Gioventù Italiana del Littorio (GIL) was the youth organisation of Fascist Italy between 1937 and 1943. Established to promote physical training, military preparedness, and Fascist ideology among Italian youth, the organisation became an important part of Mussolini’s regime. Daggers of this pattern were worn as part of the organisation’s uniform and today remain sought-after relics of the period.
