Description

This is an original British military map dated 1911, issued as part of the Whitehall Series and published by Forster Groom & Co. Ltd., military publishers of Charing Cross, London. The map covers the Shorncliffe and Folkestone area of Kent, a region of long-standing military importance that would go on to play a major role during the mobilisation and early stages of the First World War.

Produced immediately prior to WWI, this map was intended for military training and planning use in a key garrison and embarkation district rather than as a wartime operational map. The detail reflects a pre-war landscape, with civilian infrastructure, barracks, and transport networks shown without later wartime revisions or overprints.

The map survives with its original printed Whitehall Series cover, which is increasingly scarce and confirms its commercial military publication context. As a pre-First World War Edwardian military map, it represents Britain’s preparedness and military geography on the eve of the conflict, making it a desirable and historically grounded piece for collectors of early 20th-century British military and cartographic material.

A special mention must be made regarding the condition of this piece. Considering its age, it survives in excellent overall condition. The original printed cover remains in very good condition, as shown in the photographs. Importantly, there are no holes along the fold lines of the map, an issue commonly encountered on period paper maps of this age. There is no staining present, and no rips or tears to the paper. The map appears to have been carefully stored for decades, likely kept flat or folded and left undisturbed until rediscovered. Maps of considerably lesser age are often found in notably poorer condition, making this example particularly appealing.

When fully unfolded, it measures 25.5” x 15”.
