A very honest and well-preserved example showing clear markings, strong overall condition, and good service character throughout. The regimental marking adds genuine historical interest and elevates this beyond a standard production piece.
Blade
The blade is in very good condition, it remains bright and clean with a good tip. The edge is tidy and shows no signs of post war sharpening. The ricasso is crisply marked with Crown over ER, 1903, and the maker Sanderson, Sheffield. Inspection stamps are present and visible. An “X” bend test mark is stamped to the reverse, indicating it passed the official flexibility bend test. Additional inspection stamps are present to the spine.
Hilt & Grips
The wooden grips are original and in excellent condition, secured with their correct screw bolts. The oil hole is present to the top of the grip, and the rifle retaining button is fully functional. The pommel is clearly regimentally stamped 2 Mx 590, interpreted as 2nd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. Always nice to see regimental markings, as it leaves an option for further research. An additional factory marking is present on top of the pommel (EFD), this refers to (Enfield Factory Designation) indicating that the bayonet was manufactured, repaired, or converted at the Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield.
Scabbard
Complete with its correct leather scabbard.
The full leather scabbard remains in very good condition with tight stitching throughout. The metal chape is present to the lower tip and displays the broad arrow mark. Further markings are present to the rear seam area, but are faint (see photos). The scabbard retains good structure and shape and the bayonet fits correctly with a satisfying, secure fit.
Overall
A very attractive and interesting 1903 Pattern bayonet, regimentally marked to the 2nd Middlesex Regiment, with an excellent blade and good condition leather scabbard.
A strong collector’s piece with clear markings and honest service character.
Historical Note
The Pattern 1903 bayonet was introduced for use with the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle during the early 20th century, at a time when British military doctrine was placing renewed emphasis on close-quarters fighting and bayonet training. It replaced the earlier long sword-type bayonets and reflected a shift toward a handier, more practical fighting blade suited to modern infantry tactics.
Although its service life was relatively short before being superseded by the Pattern 1907, the 1903 pattern saw issue to regular British Army units and would have been carried during the pre-Great War period. Regimentally marked examples, such as this piece, add an additional layer of historical interest, offering a tangible connection to a specific unit and its service history.
