Description

A textbook example of the British Pattern 1907 bayonet, adopted for use with the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) rifle and issued as the standard British bayonet throughout the First World War. Produced in vast numbers by multiple makers to meet wartime demand, the 1907 pattern saw widespread service across the conflict. This example is a solid, honest wartime bayonet in very good overall condition.

Blade
The blade is very clean with an excellent profile and a strong, well-formed tip. It retains what appears to be a correct factory edge, with no signs of heavy post-service sharpening or abuse. No active rust is present.

On the ricasso, one side is marked with Crown over GR, 1907, the date 1916, and the maker Sanderson. The reverse shows the broad arrow and inspection stamps, along with the bending proof “X” mark.

Hilt & Grips
The steel crossguard and pommel retain strong original finish and present extremely well. The wooden grip plates are in excellent condition, dark brown in colour, and remain secured by the original screw bolts. The rifle retaining button is functional and an oil hole is present.

Scabbard
Accompanied by its leather scabbard with metal mounts. The fittings retain strong original finish and remain held by the original staples. An inspection stamp is present beneath the frog stud on the upper mount. The leather remains in good shape with light wear, and the rear stitching is intact and tight. Markings are present to the scabbard, including a broad arrow and a “W” stamp, indicating the leather has been treated with paraffin wax, to make it more durable and water-resistant.

The bayonet draws smoothly and seats securely in the scabbard.

Overall
A clean, honest, standard First World War 1907 bayonet by Sanderson, dated 1916.   A very presentable example for the British bayonet collector.

Historical Note
Introduced in 1907, this bayonet was designed for the SMLE rifle and became the principal British bayonet of the First World War. Its long blade reflects pre-war infantry doctrine and it remained in widespread service throughout the conflict.
