Description
Chinese Kuomintang Army Officer’s Dagger.
These rare Chinese officer’s dress dagger are very ornate and come in different variations. This particular dagger stands out due to the detailed inscription on the grip. On one side, it reads: “Gift from Xu Tin who is the Chief of Education, Department of Mechanical Army School.” The other side is inscribed with the values: “Wisdom, Kindness, Courage.”
The grip itself is particularly nice, crafted from age-toned multicoloured celluloid and wrapped with nine rows of silver grip wire. A silver panel runs centrally down both sides of the grip, starting at the ferrule and merging into the pommel. It also features a functioning spring-loaded button that releases the blade from the scabbard.
The blade still remains fairly bright overall, though there is a one-inch wide area of pitting on one side (see photos for reference).
The scabbard is fitted with ornate top and bottom scabbard mounts with a floral motif. Some areas of oxidation are visible on the middle of the scabbard and beneath the top mount.
The inscription on the handle makes it an interesting piece, with the possibility to be further researched.
