A German folding utility knife marked Soldaten Messe (Soldier’s Knife) to the blade and Solingen to the ricasso. Knives of this type are generally regarded as private-purchase utility knives and are often associated with military use. The exact date of manufacture is unknown, although the knife is undoubtedly of considerable age.

An interesting old German folding knife and only the second example of this pattern that I have personally handled.

Blade

The blade remains in good honest condition for its age and retains the majority of its original length. Many examples encountered today have been repeatedly sharpened over the years, often resulting in significant blade loss, but this example still retains much of its original profile. There is age-related wear and light surface marks consistent with use and storage.

The blade is clearly stamped Soldaten Messe, translating to Soldier’s Knife, while the ricasso is marked Solingen, confirming manufacture in Germany’s famous blade-making region.

Hilt & Grips

The original wooden grip scales remain present and intact. The grips are securely retained by their original rivets and show attractive age-related wear and patina accumulated over many years of handling. The knife retains a pleasing untouched appearance throughout.

Overall

A genuine old German folding utility knife with clear Soldaten Messe blade marking and Solingen stamp. The blade opens smoothly and snaps firmly into position. An interesting example that would sit well in a German militaria, edged weapons, or pocket knife collection.

Historical Note

The city of Solingen has been Germany’s centre of blade production for centuries and supplied countless military and civilian edged tools. Knives of this pattern are often encountered described as soldier’s utility knives, although definitive evidence linking all examples to military issue has not been established. Many collectors believe they were privately purchased knives carried by soldiers alongside their standard equipment.
