Description
An early Japanese Arisaka Type 30 bayonet featuring the desirable hooked quillon. This is a very strong example, retaining a high level of original finish throughout.
Hilt & Grips
The wooden grip plates are in mint condition, showing no damage and very little wear. An excellent set of grips. The rifle-retaining button is fully functional. The bird’s-head pommel bears an inspection stamp and a serial number reading 92222. The crossguard, hooked quillon, and hilt retain a high percentage of their original blued finish.
Blade
The steel blade is in excellent condition, showing only minor honest wear. It remains bright and does not appear to have received any post-war sharpening, finishing in a very sharp, well-defined tip. The ricasso bears the manufacturer’s mark of National Denki (National Electric), produced under the supervision of Kokura Arsenal.
Scabbard
The steel scabbard retains approximately 90% of its original blued finish and remains free from dents. The bayonet slides into the scabbard smoothly and seats snugly, an excellent and correct fit.
Overall
A very hard-to-fault early Type 30 bayonet with strong originality, excellent remaining finish, and desirable early features. A very presentable example that would display well.
Historical Note
The Type 30 bayonet was introduced in 1897 for use with the Arisaka rifle and remained in service through the Russo-Japanese War, the First World War, and into the Second World War. Production was overseen by major Imperial arsenals such as Kokura Arsenal, with manufacture also undertaken by private firms operating under military supervision, including National Denki (National Electric).
