German Army Officer’s Dagger by A. Schüttelhöfer & Co. (ASSO) – Near Mint Example with Original Portepee and Hangers
SKU: 0440M
Added by : Mark Raynsford
Description
This is one of the finest German Army Officer’s Daggers I have owned in over 25 years. Complete with its original officer’s portepee and hangers, it is an exceptionally well-preserved example that would be extremely difficult to upgrade.
Manufactured by A. Schüttelhöfer & Co. (ASSO), Solingen-Wald, the company is recognised by its distinctive ASSO trademark featuring the twin horses. Whilst not amongst the rarest German makers, ASSO are encountered far less frequently than many of the larger Solingen manufacturers.
Blade
The blade is in near mint condition, retaining full factory cross-graining along its entire length right through to the tip, and never been sharpened. The original ASSO maker’s mark remains etched to the rear of blade, with the blade itself displaying a superb bright finish. It is an outstanding blade that would be extremely difficult to improve upon.
Hilt & Grip
The fittings are the correct generic Army pattern, as A. Schüttelhöfer & Co. did not manufacture their own fittings in-house. The eagle crossguard displays superb detail, including the distinctive tomahawk-style beak, similar to the style we see on WKC examples.
The pommel and crossguard retain a beautiful, even dark patina, typical of solid nickel silver fittings that have naturally aged over many decades. There is only slight lightening of the patina where the portepee has rested around the crossguard and ferrule, exactly as expected from long-term wear. The orange grip is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or damage. The original officer’s portepee is in superb condition, showing no fraying and only the lightest signs of age.
Scabbard
The solid nickel silver scabbard is exceptionally well preserved. It remains perfectly straight with no dents, indentations or damage.
The throat retains its original two retaining screws, both showing no evidence of ever having been turned. The scabbard displays the same attractive, even dark patina found on the hilt fittings, giving the entire dagger a wonderfully consistent appearance.
The blade fits the scabbard perfectly, retaining a firm and positive snap when sheathed.
Hangers
Completing the set is an original pair of German Army hangers in near mint condition. Although these are the standard pattern rather than the deluxe type, they are exceptionally well preserved, retaining mint felt backs together with the desirable original leather retaining tabs.
Overall
Hard to fault this one, and comes complete with its original portepee and hangers. Definitely for the collectors chasing mint condition pieces.
