Description

A scarce Japanese Type 35 bayonet, manufactured by the Tokyo Arsenal (Koishikawa) for use with the Type 35 Naval rifle. Adopted in 1902 and issued exclusively to the Imperial Japanese Navy, these bayonets were produced in limited numbers, making them far rarer than the standard Army-issued Type 30 bayonet.

One of the distinctive differences from the Type 30 bayonet is the additional locking latch on the grip, designed to secure the scabbard in place – a Navy requirement for use in rough sea conditions.

The blade is nice and bright and remains in excellent condition, marked with the Tokyo Arsenal symbol (three interlocking circles) on the ricasso. The pommel features a working rifle retaining button, and the serial number (12199). The dark wooden grips are secured by two screws and sit on its hooked quillon crossguard. The original steel scabbard retains its shape, and is also in good condition, complete with its period correct leather frog.

A great piece for any Japanese militaria collection.
