Description

An original French medical brassard featuring a stitched red felt Red Cross emblem on a white linen armband, complete with its original metal fastening and bearing a faint circular French government inspection stamp. The stamp appears to include the word “Ministère”, indicating official French issue, although the full wording is now too faint to read with certainty.

Based on its construction, materials and style of manufacture, this brassard is believed to date from the WW1 period. However, equipment of this type was commonly retained and reused by French medical services during the early years of WW2, making it entirely possible that it also saw service during the 1939–40 campaign. As such, it represents an interesting piece spanning two significant periods of French military history.

The brassard is manufactured from heavy white linen with a separately stitched red felt cross to the centre. The original metal fastening remains attached; however, the rotating fastening pin is missing, meaning the brassard can no longer be secured as originally intended. The reverse retains its original circular ink stamp, adding to its authenticity and historical appeal despite the text now being only partially legible.

Condition is good overall for its age. The fabric displays honest signs of use and storage, including age-related discolouration, light staining and minor rust marks from the metal fitting. There are a handful of small holes to the wool red cross, consistent with what appear to be old moth holes, while the main white body of the brassard appears free from similar damage. The original fastening is present but, as noted, is incomplete due to the missing fastening pin. Overall, it remains an attractive and displayable example of an original French medical brassard.

A fascinating addition to any collection of WW1 or WW2 militaria, French military equipment, medical memorabilia or Red Cross history.
