Description

An original WW2 British Air Raid Warden plaque, a scarce piece of Home Front Civil Defence memorabilia from wartime Britain. Featuring the words “AIR RAID WARDEN” in recessed lettering, this plaque would have served as an official identifier for an Air Raid Warden, one of the thousands of civilian volunteers responsible for enforcing blackout regulations, reporting bomb damage, assisting during air raids and helping to protect local communities throughout the war.

Measuring approximately 6 x 3 inches, this is a relatively small plaque and is best described as a door sign or identification plaque rather than a large exterior building sign. While its exact original use is unknown, it may have been mounted to the door of a warden’s office, post, headquarters room or other location associated with Air Raid Precautions (ARP) activities.

The plaque is constructed from a dark moulded material. We are unable to say with certainty whether this is Bakelite, compressed fibreboard or another period composition material, but it is entirely consistent with the economy materials commonly encountered on wartime Home Front items. The recessed lettering remains clear and legible, and close inspection reveals traces of what appears to be original white paint surviving within parts of the lettering, likely applied to improve visibility and contrast.

Condition is good overall. The plaque displays honest age-related wear, including minor surface marks, edge wear and signs of long-term use. The lettering remains well defined, and the plaque retains an attractive untouched appearance that displays very well. It’s rare for a sign like this to not have a corner missing or other significant damage. A genuine and increasingly difficult-to-find piece of British WW2 Home Front history.
