Description

An original WW2-era Allied Victory “Peace & Freedom” patriotic lapel badge, believed to date from the closing stages of the war or the immediate post-war period, c.1945–1946. Small in size, measuring approximately the diameter of a modern British 10p coin, the badge features a central Victory “V” motif surrounded by the flags of five major Allied nations.

The flags depicted are those of the United Kingdom, United States, Soviet Union, France and the Republic of China. Together, these nations formed some of the principal Allied powers during WW2, making the badge a striking symbol of wartime cooperation and the hope for lasting peace following victory.

Particularly interesting is the inclusion of the Republic of China flag. During WW2, Nationalist China was internationally recognised as one of the major Allied powers and was frequently depicted alongside Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union in wartime propaganda and commemorative items. Following the Chinese Civil War and the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the continued use of the Nationalist Chinese flag became politically contentious, making the appearance of both the Soviet and Nationalist Chinese flags together on a “Peace & Freedom” badge strongly suggestive of a wartime or immediate post-war date.

The badge is constructed with a simple pin fastening to the reverse and remains an attractive and unusual piece of Allied memorabilia. Its small size would have made it suitable for wear on civilian clothing, lapels or jackets, serving as a patriotic symbol during a period of victory celebrations and post-war optimism.

Overall condition is good. The front design remains clear and well preserved, with all five national flags still readily identifiable. The reverse pin and clasp remain present and fully functional, and the badge displays very well for its age.
