Description

Please note: while this case retains a quantity of period radio valves and appears to contain several of the valve types listed on the original contents chart, the set should not be regarded as complete. An original WW2 British Army Spare Valve Case No.4G Mk I/I, intended for use with Wireless Set No.19 and Wireless Set No.22 radio equipment. Constructed from steel and finished in the familiar wartime olive green paint, the case retains its original internal contents chart to the underside of the lid, detailing the valve layout and storage positions for the various valve types required by these important British military wireless sets.

The Wireless Set No.19 was one of the most widely used British military radio systems of WW2, being fitted to tanks, armoured vehicles and command vehicles throughout the British and Commonwealth forces. The Wireless Set No.22 served as a portable field radio and remained in military service for many years after the war. Cases such as this were designed to provide operators and maintenance personnel with a convenient method of carrying replacement valves for field repairs and servicing.

This example remains a particularly attractive display piece, retaining its original removable internal cardboard carrier complete with lifting strap, individual valve compartments and lower storage drawer. The original contents diagram remains present and clearly readable, adding significantly to both the historical interest and collectability of the piece.

The case contains a quantity of period valves from a variety of manufacturers, including military-marked examples, together with original protective card sleeves and packaging. Several valve types correspond with those listed on the contents chart, including examples such as the ATS25, ARP35 and ARDD5. The assortment of valves, military markings and surviving packaging makes for an impressive and visually appealing display, particularly for collectors of military communications equipment, signals items or WW2 radio equipment.

Condition is very good overall for age and type. The exterior retains the majority of its original paint finish, with honest age-related wear and handling marks consistent with military service and long-term storage. The contents chart remains intact and legible, while the internal carrier, drawer and lifting strap all survive well. The valves themselves appear generally well preserved, though they have not been tested and are therefore sold as display items only. A scarce and increasingly difficult-to-find accessory relating to British military wireless equipment of the WW2 period.
