Description
An original WW2 British military confectionery ration tin, stencilled “Chocolate & Boiled Sweets” and marked to J.L. & Co Ltd, with the contents date clearly recorded as “PKD. 6/44” (Packed June 1944).
Tins of this type were used to store and distribute sweets and chocolate as part of wartime military supply arrangements. While simple in appearance, food-related military items provide a fascinating insight into the everyday realities of service life during WW2, highlighting the importance placed upon morale and the provision of small comforts alongside essential rations. The June 1944 packing date is particularly noteworthy, placing the tin in the same month as the D-Day landings and the Allied invasion of Normandy.
Constructed from tin-plated steel, the container retains its original stencilled markings to the lid, including the manufacturer’s details and packing date. The plain utilitarian design is typical of wartime military packaging, where practicality and ease of production were prioritised over appearance.
The tin remains in good overall condition for its age. The lid fits securely and the stencilled markings remain clearly visible and easily readable. There is expected age-related wear, surface scratching, oxidation and areas of corrosion consistent with wartime storage and use. The interior remains clean and displayable, while the exterior retains an attractive aged patina that reflects its period history. There is also, a dent to the rim of the lid, which is clearly photographed but the lid goes on and comes off just fine.
A scarce and evocative piece of WW2 military ration-related memorabilia, ideal for collectors of British military equipment, wartime food packaging, rationing items, or D-Day period artefacts.
