Description
A very nice WW2 German K98 leather bayonet frog by Gustav Sudbrack, Bielefeld, dated 1940.
The frog remains in very good condition overall, showing only light honest wear from age and service use. The leather is still supple and strong throughout, with all stitching intact and tight. It also retains its four original aluminium rivets.
The lower section of the frog has kept a good firm shape and has not become heavily distorted, which is often seen on more worn examples.
To the reverse is a double-circle maker and date stamp. The 1940 date remains visible to the centre, while the surrounding maker mark can still be identified as Gustav Sudbrack, Bielefeld. It is always nice to find a readable dated example.
Overall
A strong honest example with supple leather, tight stitching, original aluminium rivets, and visible wartime markings. A good quality frog that would pair very well with a K98 bayonet.
Historical Note
The K98 frog formed part of the standard field equipment carried by German troops during WWII, allowing the bayonet to be worn securely on the belt system. Produced by a large number of German leather manufacturers, original wartime frogs with visible maker and date markings have become increasingly harder to find.
