Description
An original WW2 Home Front Horlicks Tablets 24 Hour Ration tin bearing the desirable “As Supplied to the Air Ministry” wording to the lid. These compact tins contained Horlicks malted milk tablets, providing a concentrated source of nourishment that could be easily carried and consumed by service personnel. During WW2 they formed part of Britain’s wider wartime food production effort and are closely associated with the Air Ministry, the RAF and the British Home Front.
The colourful lithographed lid remains an attractive feature, displaying the familiar Horlicks branding alongside the wording “24 Hour Ration” and “As Supplied to the Air Ministry”. The base retains its original printed details, while the interior is clean and retains traces of its original gold-coloured finish.
Like many wartime tins, this example clearly saw a second life after its original contents had been used. The word “TOOLS” has been neatly scratched into one side, almost certainly by a previous owner who repurposed the tin for storing small tools or hardware. There is also an additional scratched inscription to the lid, although it has become too faint to confidently decipher. Rather than detracting from the piece, these markings tell part of its history and add an element of genuine period character.
Condition is good overall for its age. The tin displays honest signs of use and storage, including age-related wear, surface scratching, small areas of paint loss and light corrosion around some of the edges. The lithographed decoration remains bright and easily readable, and the tin is structurally sound throughout. Overall, one of the best features of this example is the absence of any dents. These small tins often turn up quite battered, with heavily scratched lids and significant damage to the main Horlicks logo, making this a particularly attractive survivor. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and condition assessment.
A genuine and increasingly collectible WW2 Home Front ration tin with strong Air Ministry association, ideal for collectors of British wartime memorabilia, RAF items, rationing artefacts or Home Front displays. A scarce and attractive survivor that would make an excellent addition to any military or social history collection.
