Description
An original WW2 U.S. Chemical Warfare Service Impermeable Protective Apron, M1, constructed from rubberised impermeable protective material and retaining its original wartime printed markings.
Protective items of this nature were intended for use by personnel operating in potentially contaminated environments, with the Chemical Warfare Service developing and issuing specialised equipment designed to resist chemical agents, hazardous liquids, and decontamination compounds. Far less commonly encountered today than standard field equipment, surviving examples such as this offer a fascinating glimpse into the more specialised and often overlooked areas of wartime military preparation.
The apron retains its original printed marking which reads:
“Impermeable Protective
Apron, M1
W608-CWS-1669 Medium 7
Lot”
I think there’s meant to be more after “lot” but as these items were often stamped up, certain parts of some stamps simply miss.
The rubberised construction, long protective cut, neck fastening, and waist ties are all characteristic of wartime Chemical Warfare Service protective equipment, with the piece displaying extremely well as a representative example of WW2 U.S. chemical protection gear.
Condition is overall very good for age and type. The rubberised material remains supple and displayable, with the original straps, stitching, and fittings all appearing strong and intact. There is visible white surface bloom and age-related oxidation to areas of the impermeable finish, entirely consistent with the ageing commonly seen on surviving WW2 rubberised equipment. As always, this item has been left entirely untouched and uncleaned, preserving its original wartime character and appearance throughout.
It’s worth noting that, due to the nature of the rubberised material, this item is best stored away from excessive heat and direct sunlight. While it can be folded, it is generally preferable to store it lightly folded or loosely rolled where possible to help minimise long-term stress to the material.
