Description
An original WW2 USAAF Grimes Model K-3 Aircraft Inter-Aircraft Control Lamp Set, manufactured by the Grimes Manufacturing Company of Urbana, Ohio, USA. Designed for use with 24-volt aircraft electrical systems, these specialised signalling lamps were used for aircraft-to-aircraft and aircraft-to-ground communication, employing interchangeable coloured filters to transmit visual signals when required.
This is a particularly complete example, retaining its original carrying case, Grimes Model K-3 lamp, four interchangeable coloured filters, original GE aircraft bulb and surviving manufacturer’s labels. The lamp remains clearly marked with the Grimes maker’s plate, while the interior of the case still retains part of its original identification label describing the set as an “Inter-Aircraft Control” lamp assembly.
The lamp is fitted with its original cable, although the plug has been cut from the end at some point during its life. As a result, the lamp has not been tested and is therefore being sold as an untested collector’s item. Given its age and originality, many collectors will appreciate that it has not been modified with a modern replacement plug.
Overall, the set is in fair to good original condition for a piece of WW2 aviation equipment. The lamp retains much of its original finish with honest signs of service and storage wear, while the original case remains structurally sound with age-related scuffs, scratches and wear to the exterior. The leather carrying handle is intact, and the interior continues to protect the lamp and accessories well despite the expected wear to the lining and paper identification label. The coloured filters are all present, making this an attractive and increasingly difficult set to find complete.
An excellent display piece for collectors of USAAF, military aviation or WW2 signalling equipment, this original Grimes lamp set represents a fascinating piece of wartime aircraft equipment from one of America’s best-known manufacturers of military aircraft lighting and electrical components. Complete examples such as this, retaining both the original case and filter set, are becoming increasingly difficult to source and make an impressive addition to any WW2 aviation collection.
