Description
A very nice example of a Remington Pattern 1913 bayonet dated March 1916, complete with its original brown leather scabbard and period frog.
Closely related to the earlier Pattern 1907 bayonet, the Pattern 1913 incorporated several subtle design changes while retaining the familiar overall appearance. This example remains in honest collector condition with clear markings, a good blade, original grips and a fully functioning release button.
Blade
The blade is in very good condition, with the edge showing evidence of period sharpening but has not been excessively ground, retaining a pleasing profile and leading into a good point.
The ricasso is clearly marked 1913 over 3 16, indicating manufacture in March 1916 by Remington. The reverse ricasso bears the Broad Arrow, Crown inspection marks, the bend-test “X” stamp together with additional inspection marks including A3 and A.
Hilt & Grips
The steel hilt remains in good condition throughout. The original wooden grip scales are secure and undamaged, displaying the distinctive twin grooves associated with the Pattern 1913 pattern. These grooves were introduced to improve grip and are one of the easiest ways to distinguish a Pattern 1913 from the earlier Pattern 1907 bayonet.
The front grip scale is marked with the letter “A” and the number “92”. The muzzle ring is longer than that found on the Pattern 1907 bayonet, reflecting the differences between the rifles for which the two bayonets were designed. The pommel retains a fully functioning rifle-retaining button which operates correctly. The finials retain traces of their original blued finish.
Scabbard
The bayonet is housed in its original brown leather scabbard. The leather remains solid throughout with all stitching intact. There is age-related wear and creasing present, particularly towards the lower section, entirely consistent with period service and storage. The lower metal fitting is marked RE and the scabbard retains its original staple. The bayonet fits the scabbard correctly with a snug fit and positive retention.
Frog
The bayonet is accompanied by a period frog.
The leather shows honest service wear but remains strong and structurally sound. All brass rivets remain present and secure. A circular stamp is visible to the reverse of the frog, although the exact marking remains difficult to identify with certainty. The frog displays good age and complements the bayonet and scabbard well.
Overall
A very attractive Remington Pattern 1913 bayonet dated March 1916, complete with its original brown leather scabbard and period frog. With clear markings, a good blade, original grips, functioning release button and pleasing untouched appearance throughout, this is a strong collector-grade example of a Pattern 1913 bayonet.
Historical Note
The British Pattern 1907 bayonet was originally developed for the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle and featured a hooked quillon on its earliest production examples. The hooked quillon was later deemed unnecessary and removed from production as well as many existing bayonets already in service.
The Pattern 1913 bayonet was developed for the experimental Pattern 1913 rifle and incorporated several subtle design changes, including the distinctive grooved grips and longer muzzle ring. Although the rifle itself was never adopted on a large scale, the bayonet design proved highly successful.
When the United States entered the First World War, the Pattern 1913 design was adapted into the American Model 1917 bayonet. As a result, the Pattern 1907, Pattern 1913 and Model 1917 bayonets remain closely linked in their development and continue to be popular with collectors today.
