Description
An original U.S. Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor socket bayonet, complete with its steel scabbard and leather frog.
Blade & Socket
The triangular blade retains the majority of its blued finish and is marked U.S. to the top of the blade. There is surface oxidation and age-related wear throughout, with heavier rust visible to the socket and locking collar area. The bayonet fits the scabbard correctly.
Scabbard
The steel scabbard is free from dents or significant damage and the bayonet fits well. It appears to have been painted black at some point during its life and has the drainage hole to the bottom.
Frog
The leather frog has the brass MASS marked front stud / belt hook. The leather is worn, dry and fragile in places, with some separation where it joins the scabbard. This should be handled with care, and the condition of the frog has been reflected in the asking price.
Overall
An original U.S. Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor socket bayonet offered with its steel scabbard and leather frog. This is an honest example showing age and service wear throughout. It is not a mint example, but it is a genuine and authentic piece of U.S. military history.
Historical Note
The Model 1873 socket bayonet was designed for the U.S. Springfield .45-70 “Trapdoor” rifle, which entered service in 1873. These triangular socket bayonets were used with the Springfield Trapdoor rifle during the late 19th century and remained in use with U.S. forces and state organisations for many years.
