Description
A well-presented and fully researched Victorian Egypt Medal 1882 to Edward Staples, who served in the Army Hospital Corp, accompanied by an extensive run of copied service paperwork and a period photograph covering his enlistment, service, and later life.
The medal features the bust of Queen Victoria to the obverse and remains in good, honest condition, showing expected age and wear.
The reverse clearly shows the Sphinx with “EGYPT” above the date “1882” below, confirming service connected to the Egyptian campaign of that year.
The accompanying research material ties directly to Edward Staples and provides a clear and traceable service record, including attestation papers confirming enlistment in 1873, service records showing approximately 22 years’ service, medical history sheets, census documentation, and a death certificate confirming death in 1940, Liverpool. Also included is a period carte de visite photograph, forming part of the lot, although this is not confirmed as the recipient.
The paperwork is supplied as copied archive material and forms a strong supporting archive to the medal, giving a detailed and continuous service history.
Historical Note
The Egypt Medal 1882 was awarded to British forces who took part in the campaign in Egypt, including the operations around Alexandria and Tel el-Kebir. Members of the Army Hospital Corps played an important role during this campaign, providing medical care and support to the wounded.
As a serving member of the Army Hospital Corps, Edward Staples would have been part of this essential medical support during the Egyptian operations of 1882.
