An original WW1 British Royal Garrison Artillery slide rule, complete with its original 1916 dated War Department broad arrow leather case and named throughout to its original owner, T.H. Rice, R.G.A. This is a superb example of a military scientific instrument from WW1, combining official military markings with personal provenance.

The leather case is clearly stamped with the British War Department broad arrow alongside the date 1916, firmly placing it within the WW1 period. The owner’s details, “T.H. Rice, R.G.A.” (Royal Garrison Artillery), are neatly handwritten to the exterior of the leather case, repeated inside the flap, and again to the slide rule itself. Having the same owner identified in multiple locations is a particularly desirable feature, adding both authenticity and historical interest.

The Royal Garrison Artillery was responsible for Britain’s heavy artillery, siege guns and coastal defences during WW1. Personnel serving in technical roles frequently relied upon instruments such as slide rules to perform the complex calculations required for artillery ranging, engineering and surveying, making this an entirely appropriate piece of equipment associated with the regiment.

The slide rule itself remains in excellent original condition, with all scales crisp, clean and clearly legible. It opens and closes smoothly, and there are no chips, cracks, breaks or repairs to the wooden body. The handwritten ownership markings remain bold and easily readable throughout.
