Description
This is a fine example of the U.S. Model 1917 bayonet, designed for use with the M1917 Enfield .30 caliber rifle. Manufactured by Remington during World War 1.
Blade & Markings
This 432mm blade is in superb condition, retaining its original factory-sharpened edge and a sharp, well-defined point. It features a deep single fuller on both sides and a rounded spine. The ricasso is stamped with “1917” and the Remington name inside a circle. On the reverse side, the blade bears the U.S. ordnance stamp and flaming bomb emblem. A partially struck bend test “X” stamp is visible, denoting inspection.
Grip & Crossguard
The walnut grips are in excellent condition, showing minimal wear and secured with two screw bolts. The crossguard and upper pommel retain their original blueing, and the rifle retaining button functions perfectly. The clearing hole is present. This was added to allow dirt or debris to be removed from the end of the slot.
Scabbard & Frog.
The bayonet comes complete with its MK II green leather scabbard, which is also in excellent condition. The leather remains firm with all stitching intact. The lower metal scabbard mount is marked “GF” inside an oval, identifying the maker of the mounts, the General Fireproofing Co, of Youngstown, Ohio. It also includes the original leather frog, which remains supple and sound.
A superb and complete example of the U.S. 1917 Remington bayonet.
