An interesting and uncommon First World War Belgian M18 gas mask, complete with its original metal carrying tin, filter and straps. This distinctive late-war respirator incorporates a German leather face mask together with French ARS respirator components.

The mask remains in good overall condition considering its age, with the leather facepiece retaining a good overall shape. There is age-related wear in places, as would be expected from an original First World War gas mask, but overall it presents very well.

Mask

The brown leather facepiece remains in good overall condition. Both eye lenses are present and intact, with no cracks to the glass. The metal lens surrounds and internal protective fittings also remain in place. Importantly, all of the original fabric head straps to the rear are still present and intact.

There is general age-related wear to the leather and fittings, consistent with the age and nature of the item.

Filter

The original painted filter is present and retains a considerable amount of its khaki/ochre painted finish, with areas of surface wear.

The filter carries the markings HLW and N243.

Carrying Tin

The mask is accompanied by its original cylindrical metal carrying tin, retaining its brown/khaki painted finish.

The tin remains in very good structural condition with no dents, and the lid opens and closes correctly. The original carrying strap is also present.

The underside carries its original manufacturer’s stamping together with the clearly visible date 1918.

The top of the carrying tin is painted MAM 25, a marking also encountered on other surviving examples of these Belgian M18 carrying tins.

Historical Note

The Belgian M18 is an unusual late-First World War respirator produced using German leather gas-mask facepieces combined with French ARS respirator and filter components. Surviving examples are known with French-pattern filters and 1918 dated carrying tins.
