An original World War I British Second Pattern Brodie steel helmet retaining its original textured finish, giving it the distinctive roughened appearance associated with wartime production. The shell remains in very good condition for its age and presents as a well-preserved example of this iconic First World War helmet.

Shell

This is the Second Pattern Brodie helmet, featuring the folded rim rather than the raw edge found on the earlier First Pattern examples. The steel shell retains the majority of its original textured finish, with expected service-related marks acquired over its lifetime. Stamped to the underside of the rim with the maker’s mark HS and the number 398. The original split-pin fixings remain firmly in place, securing the liner in the traditional manner used on British Brodie helmets.

Liner & Chinstrap

Fitted with its original period liner, which remains complete and remarkably well preserved. The original chinstrap is also still present. When the black rubberised liner covering is carefully lifted, faint period inspection stamps can be seen underneath, as shown in the photographs.

Overall

A genuine and increasingly desirable World War I British Brodie helmet, retaining its original finish, original liner and original chinstrap. Helmets that have survived with their original internal fittings intact are becoming increasingly difficult to find, making this an excellent addition to any First World War or British military collection.

Historical Note

Introduced during the First World War, the Brodie helmet was designed to provide British soldiers with improved protection against shell fragments and falling debris whilst serving in the trenches. Its simple yet highly effective design became one of the defining symbols of the British Army during the Great War and remained in military service, in various forms, for many years afterwards.
