Description

This is an original WW1 British “Bulletelle” portable dexterity game, a fascinating and highly evocative piece of wartime social history. Designed as a compact and easily transportable pastime, games of this type were intended to provide entertainment in otherwise difficult conditions, with the reverse label explicitly noting their suitability for use on board ship, in railway carriages, or even in the trenches.

Housed in its original wooden frame with glazed front, the game features a simple but engaging gravity-based mechanism in which small balls are guided into scoring holes via a central spinner. Its compact form and hand-operated design made it ideal for soldiers and travellers alike, offering a brief distraction and morale boost during long periods of waiting or transit.

The piece is clearly marked “BULLETELLE – Patent Applied For” to the front, while the reverse retains its original printed instruction sheet. This is a particularly strong feature, with the text remaining clear, legible and well preserved, adding both display appeal and historical interest.

Condition is very good for its age. The glass front is intact with no cracks, and the internal playing surface remains clean and fully readable, showing only light, honest age-related wear. The wooden frame displays some expected edge wear and handling marks but retains a rich colour and solid structure. The original instruction label to the reverse is in excellent condition, with sharp, readable text. The internal mechanism appears complete and the game presents very well overall.

A genuinely unusual and characterful WW1 item, perfectly suited to collectors interested in trench life, soldier pastimes, and the human side of the war.
