Description

This is a good example of a British military-issued kukri knife, dated 1915.

The blade has a well-forged, forward-curving profile with a deeply cut kaudi (notch) at the base-a traditional feature on all combat kukris. The condition of the blade overall is very good, although it does show wear and some light pitting in places, (see photos). The markings on the blade “IC” stands for India Contract, confirming it was made in India under British military contract. The Broad Arrow signifies British War Department ownership, and the number “38” is likely an inspector’s or batch number.

The leather scabbard is dated 1917 and in good condition with tight stitching and complete with an undented brass chape. The leather shows wear consistent with service use.

The handle is nicely carved from a hard wood. It features two large brass rivets securing the full tang construction. The centre grip has raised rings, traditional to military kukris, offering additional grip in wet conditions. The wide flared pommel is to prevent slippage when swung with force.

On closer inspection of the scabbard, it appears the owner attempted to personalise it by carving out a crude shield-like design. Poorly done, but it adds a touch of character to the piece.
