Description
A genuine WWI British Mills No.5 Mk I grenade, produced during 1915 and retaining strong early war characteristics. This example is clearly stamped to the base plug with Mills patent details and shows a filling date of October 1915, placing it firmly within early wartime production. A solid, honest example.
This example is inert and safe, with no explosive content.
Body
The cast iron body remains in very good condition with well-defined segmentation throughout. It retains a consistent, untouched finish with a pleasing, even tone. The metal shows honest age, with no signs of damage or interference.
Lever & Pin
Complete with its original lever and pull ring. This example features the earlier small ring, a detail associated with early production before later wartime changes. The lever retains clear patent markings, which is seldom seen and adds to the piece.
Base Plug
The brass base plug is clearly marked “No.5 Mk I” along with Mills patent numbers and “Mills Munitions Ltd, Birmingham.” It is also stamped “10/15,” indicating an October 1915 filling date. The markings remain sharp and legible.
Overall
A strong, early WWI example of the Mills No.5 Mk I grenade, combining clear markings, correct early features, and an honest untouched appearance. Early dated examples such as this are always sought after, particularly when retaining their original components and not having been altered over time.
Historical Note
The Mills grenade was introduced in 1915 and quickly became the standard British hand grenade of the First World War. Early Mk I examples such as this reflect the rapid development and refinement of design during the opening phase of the conflict, with features like the smaller pull ring later evolving as production standardised.
