WW1 Brodie Helmet-77th U.S. Infantry Division
SKU:
Added by : Mark Raynsford
Description
An original WW1 British Brodie helmet manufactured by Hadfields Ltd, Sheffield, stamped HS 461 to the rim. This example is especially desirable as it features the painted insignia of the U.S. Army’s 77th Infantry Division-the “Statue of Liberty Division”. The bold yellow emblem over a black shield remains clear and is one of the most recognisable WW1 helmet markings.
The helmet remains in untouched condition with its original chinstrap lugs but unfortunately no liner. To the inside shell there is some handwritten writing, possibly the original soldier’s name and unit, though it is difficult to make out, (see photos). The shell is in solid condition, showing age, but no cracks or major dents.
The 77th Division was raised in New York City in 1917 and is best remembered for its bravery in France, most famously in the “lost Battalion” incident of October 1918.
