Description
WW1 French 1886 Lebel Bayonet-First Pattern.
This is a good example of a Model 1886 Lebel bayonet in uncleaned original condition, complete with scabbard.
This particular bayonet is the first pattern model, of which many variations and modifications were made. It features removable silver alloy grips with a functioning locking lug. The metal quillon shows a partially visible issue number, but unfortunately due to wear, I can only identify the number “27”.
The cruciform long blade measures 52cm, which is correct for this model. It slides smoothly in and out of the scabbard with no issues. An additional issue number appears on the scabbard ring of the scabbard, but due to wear, only “427” is visible (see photos)
Many of these bayonets had their blades shortened, as many soldiers found their use within the confined space of a trench difficult to handle.
