Description
These bayonets were produced to fit the mauser M98 rifle. While they were a new type bayonet, they did make use of the converted blades from the previous model, the 71/84. There was only two variations of this blade, a long or short fuller. This example comes with the short fuller, which was the earliest variation.
What’s interesting about this blade, is that it is double maker marked. We don’t see this very often and I personally feel it adds to the piece. The two makers on the blade are “EUFURT” and “WEYERSBERG KIRSHBAUM & CO” and on the spine of the blade it is dated “87” under a “W” and a proof stamp. The blade does have light staining and minor pitting but overall is still fairly bright.
The wooden grips are in great condition and are a nice rich brown colour. The rifle retaining button works perfectly and there are two proof stamps to the rear upper pommel. The lower crossguard has unit markings that read “72.R.3.46” this tells us it was the 72nd infantry regiment, 3rd company, weapon number 46.
The scabbard is nice and straight and in very good condition apart from one minor indentation on the right side two inches above the lower ball.
The bayonet fits the scabbard perfectly.
