Description
This really is a fine example of the iconic WW1 German 98/05 bayonet, more commonly referred to by collectors as the ” Butcher Bayonet”.
The blade remains bright and in superb condition, retaining a long row of sharp sawback teeth and a fine undamaged tip. The spine is marked with a crown over “W” (for Kaiser Wilhelm), the date 1915, and an inspection stamp. The ricasso is stamped with the Erfurt crowned mark, confirming the German state arsenal as the manufacturer.
The light colour wooden grips are in perfect condition and secured by two screw bolts. The rifle retaining button is fully functional, with two clear inspection stamps above it. This example also features the desirable early pattern crossguard with the prominent high ears.
The leather scabbard is exceptionally well preserved, among the finest examples we have seen. all stitching intact and tight, with two clear inspection stamps on the throat and another on the lower mount. There is a slight amount of shrinkage noticeable when the bayonet is sheathed, though nothing significant, and is quite common with original WW1 leather scabbards. Overall, the scabbard perfectly complements the bayonet.
To complete the set, the bayonet is accompanied by its leather frog and a white Knott. The frog appears to be dated 1915, matching the bayonet, although the marking is partially worn, due to age.
A superb example that would be hard to upgrade.
