Description
This is an excellent example of the iconic WW1 German 98/05 sawback bayonet, also known as the “butcher” bayonet.
The wooden grips are an attractive colour, show no damage and secured in place with its original two screw bolts. The cross-guard, flash-guard and hilt remain in excellent condition, showing no signs of damage. The hilt includes a fully functional rifle-retaining button and proof stamp.
The blade shows some minor patches of staining, but is still bright and in very good condition. The ricasso is maker marked “Waffenfabrik Mauser A.G.” and the spine is also marked with a “W” under a crown, dated “16” and another proof stamp.
The scabbard is in excellent condition, showing only minimal wear and maintaining a decent about of its original blueing. Accompanying the bayonet is its correct leather frog, with all stitching and rivets intact. The frog is marked by the maker and dated, though the mark is faint, it appears to be 1916.
Overall, this is a very fine example of a WW1 sawback bayonet in great condition.
