An original German Protestant hymn book (Gesangbuch) for the Evangelical Church in Württemberg, published in 1912 and presented as a confirmation gift during WW1. Small enough to be carried in a pocket, these books contained hymns, prayers and religious texts for regular church worship and personal devotion. This example is made especially desirable by its beautifully handwritten presentation inscription, dated 9th April 1916, placing it firmly within the WW1 period and providing a tangible link to civilian life in Imperial Germany.

The black leatherette cover remains in outstanding condition, retaining its rich finish and crisp gilt decoration. The front bears the title “Befiehl dem Herrn deine Wege!”, which translates to “Commit your way unto the Lord” or “Entrust your path to the Lord,” while the spine is simply titled “Gesangbuch”, meaning “Hymn Book.” The gilt lettering is exceptionally well preserved, remaining bright and sharp, while the gilt page edges are also remarkably well retained, giving the book an attractive, almost as-new appearance.

Inside, the title page identifies the book as “Gesangbuch für die evangelische Kirche in Württemberg – 1912 – Kleine Ausgabe”, translating to “Hymn Book for the Evangelical Church in Württemberg – 1912 – Small Edition.” The book includes an engraved frontispiece depicting Christ carrying the Cross, followed by hundreds of hymns complete with musical notation and accompanying prayers.

Perhaps the most personal feature is the handwritten dedication on the presentation page, which reads:

“Dedicated by your Aunt Waibel on the occasion of your Confirmation to her dear nephew Walter Kochfeld. 9th April 1916.”

This inscription transforms the book from a standard period hymn book into a named historical artefact, connecting it directly to a family in wartime Germany and dating its presentation to the height of WW1.

The condition is excellent throughout. The binding remains tight and secure, with only the lightest signs of age-related handling. The gilt lettering to both the front cover and spine is exceptionally crisp, while the gilt page edges remain near perfect. Internally, the pages are clean and highly legible, with all text clear and easy to read. There is some light age toning and minor foxing in places, entirely consistent with a book of this age, but nothing that detracts from its presentation. Overall, this is an exceptionally well-preserved example that would make an excellent addition to any collection of WW1 memorabilia, Imperial German artefacts or antique religious books.
