Description
WW1 German S.84/98 n.A. Bayonet.
The demand for bayonets in Germany during WW1 was so great that re-using or recycling became necessary. Stored old stock 71/84 blades were repurposed and adapted onto S.84/98 n.A. hilts. This resulted in a hybrid bayonet.
The blade on this bayonet is nice and bright and in very good condition, featuring square fullers and an excellent sharp tip. The spine of the blade bears markings, that include a “W” beneath a crown. The number “15” which represents the year 1915, year of its modification, and a proof stamp. The blade is also maker marked on the ricasso, which reads, “Move-Werke Walter & Co Muhlhausen”.
The wooden grip plates are undamaged and in excellent condition. The hilt includes a fully functioning rifle-retaining button, along with a proof stamp on the rear hilt.
The scabbard is undamaged and shows no signs of any indentations, although there is some light pitting in places.
Overall, a decent example of a German WW1 bayonet with an excellent blade.
