Description

Here we have an exceptionally clean WW1 German 98/05 bayonet, commonly referred to as the butcher bayonet. This is a genuine Bavarian-issue example, manufactured by the Bavarian engineering firm Fichtel & Sachs, Schweinfurt, a scarcer maker not encountered very often on the market today.

Blade:

The blade is super clean, bright, and free from rust, showing slightly deeper than normal twin fullers typical of Fichel & Sach production. The original point remains sharp and well-defined, with no damage or edge wear. The ricasso is stamped in full capitals with the Bavarian maker mark, FICHTEL & SACHS SCHWEINFURT. On the spine we have the usual Crown, date, and inspection stamps. This one is dated 1916

Hilt & Grips

The dark walnut grip plates are superb, with no crack, chips, heavy wear, or shrinkage – and are securely held in place by the correct screw bolts. Walnut was the standard wood used mostly on Imperial German bayonets due to its strength and impact resistance, and these grips retain an attractive rich, original finish. The rifle retaining button functions smoothly and carries a small inspector’s stamp, as does the top of the pommel, matching the Bavarian acceptance pattern seen on the blade spine. These consistent markings show the piece passed both component and final factory inspection at Fichel & Sachs. The cross-guard bears the wartime Bavarian rack number: 2 1 1 6, typical spacing for Bavarian armoury numbering.

Scabbard:

The steel scabbard is in very good condition with no damage or dents. The throat carries two inspection stamps, with the original throat screw present. There is light, honest pitting toward the lower ball, which doesn’t stand out or detract from the overall appearance.

Frog:

Included is a correct WW1 leather 98/05 frog, complete with stitching and all four rivets intact. There is an unusual hole on the rear lower section, which I must admit, seems an odd place to have one, but fortunately its on the rear side and out of sight when displayed.

Overall:

This is a superb 1916 Bavarian 98/05 bayonet by a scarce maker we don’t see to often, featuring an excellent condition bright blade, with attractive dark walnut grips. A very desirable bayonet.

Historical Note:

The 98/05 bayonet was introduced by the German army in 1905 as a stronger, more robust replacement for earlier long, fragile bayonets, Its wide spine and cleaver -like profile earned it the nickname “butcher bayonet” among allied troops.
