WW1 German Trench Fighting Knife – ERN, Wald Rhenl

SKU: 0144M

Added by : Mark Raynsford

Description

A genuine First World War German trench fighting knife in its original scabbard. This is a regulation-type combat knife, commonly referred to as a Kampfmesser, carried by German soldiers during the trench warfare period of the Great War.

This example presents as an honest, unmolested piece, showing correct wartime construction and natural service wear throughout.

Blade
Single-edged steel blade retaining a strong, well-defined profile and pointed tip. The blade carries clear maker markings to both sides, with ERN / WALD RHEINL stamped to one face and RASIERMESSER-FABRIK stamped to the reverse. These markings are correctly struck and consistent with known wartime production.

Surface wear and light age toning are present, appropriate to a service-used trench knife. There is no evidence of grinding, reshaping, or later interference.

Hilt & Grips
Wooden grip scales are in very good condition, showing no cracks or damage, and are secured by correct domed rivets. The characteristic grooved grip profile remains well defined. The steel crossguard is firm and undisturbed, with honest wear consistent with age.

Scabbard
Original steel scabbard retaining a good amount of its original blackened finish. The scabbard body remains straight and undented, which is a strong point on a knife intended for trench use.

Leather & Suspension
The original leather belt loop and retaining strap remain attached. The leather shows service wear but remains intact, with the press-stud fastener present and functional. A small area of wear is visible near the popper, but this does not detract from the overall integrity of the piece.

Overall
A very good example of a WWI German trench fighting knife by a known maker, retaining its original scabbard and leather. An honest, service-used piece that displays well and sits comfortably within a serious First World War edged-weapons collection.
