Description

This original WW2 ARP / Civil Defence Lamp with Hood, boxed to the M.O.H. Pattern WD 3051, is a superb example of British Home Front lighting equipment. These lamps were vital for Air Raid Wardens and rescue teams operating during wartime blackouts.

This pattern of lamp was issued under the Ministry of Home Security for ARP duties, designed to provide a controlled beam of light while preventing upward light-spill during blackout conditions. The distinctive hooded top with circular aperture, combined with the white-reflector interior, allowed wardens to carry out inspections, mark hazards, or signal quietly without compromising local light discipline. The lamp’s simple sheet-metal construction and small low-wattage bulb reflect wartime manufacturing priorities: sturdy, functional, and quickly produced for mass civilian defence use.

What makes this example especially appealing is the survival of its original cardboard box, clearly printed with LAMP A.R.P. with Hood, M.O.H. Code No. WD 3051, and Order No. S1/52/B1. Packaging for Home Front equipment was rarely kept, making boxed examples significantly harder to find and highly desirable to collectors. The box only has minimal wear. The lamp itself remains in very good condition with clean paintwork, intact handle, and original fittings. Finding one in such excellent condition — especially complete with an original box this well preserved — is exceptionally rare.

A classic and evocative item from the Air Raid Precautions service, this boxed ARP lamp is an ideal addition to any WW2 British Home Front, Civil Defence, or wartime display. Hard to improve upon if you’re seeking an authentic, complete example of this iconic piece of blackout-era equipment.
