Description
This is an original set of WW2 British Anti-Gas Tinted Eyeshields, complete with their original wartime packet and dated March 1944.
These protective eyeshields formed part of Britain’s extensive Home Front gas defence preparations during the Second World War. Issued for use alongside other Civil Defence equipment, they were intended to help protect the eyes from irritation and contamination caused by chemical warfare agents. In the event of exposure, the shields could be worn during or after decontamination procedures to help reduce further contact with harmful substances.
The shields themselves are made from tinted celluloid with felt brow padding and elastic head straps secured by press-stud leather tabs. The tinted lenses were designed to provide protection while maintaining visibility in difficult conditions. Several shields remain together as part of this set, and they are housed in their original brown card packet which contains printed instructions relating to personal decontamination procedures.
The packet is clearly marked “Eyeshields Anti-Gas Tinted” and also includes instructions covering the use of cotton waste, ointment, and decontamination procedures for both skin and equipment. These instructions reflect the broader Civil Defence training issued to ARP personnel and other Home Front services responsible for responding to potential gas attacks.
A printed marking inside the packet reads “H.P. 3/1944”, indicating wartime packing in March 1944. Although gas attacks on Britain never ultimately occurred, equipment such as this formed a vital part of the country’s preparedness throughout the war.
The condition here makes this small but refined piece stand out. As the photographs show, the shields themselves have survived in very good order. Items of this type are frequently found scratched, dented, or otherwise damaged due to the fragile nature of the materials, making clean surviving examples increasingly difficult to find. The overall condition here helps this set stand out as a particularly well-preserved example for any WW2 Home Front collection.
A very interesting and well-preserved example of WW2 Home Front Civil Defence gas protection equipment, complete with its original packet and wartime printed instructions.
