An original WW2 British Blackie “Tommy’s Cooker” methylated spirit stove, complete with its original flame reducer and retaining its original paper instruction label. Manufactured by G. Blackie Ltd. of Peckham, London, these compact stoves were designed to provide a reliable and economical source of heat for both military personnel and civilians during WW2. Commonly referred to as a “Tommy Cooker”, they became a familiar piece of wartime equipment thanks to their simple, practical design and impressive burning time.

Designed to burn methylated spirits, the Blackie provided a steady source of heat rather than a fierce flame, making it ideal for heating food and drinks over extended periods. The original instruction label states that it would burn for up to eight hours on one pint of methylated spirit and, when used with the flame reducer, provide a low, steady heat for up to twenty-four hours.

One of the standout features of this example is the surviving paper label, which advertises the cooker as being “Invaluable for Hot Drinks in A.R.P. Shelters, Refuge Rooms, Nurseries, etc.” This wonderfully captures its important role on the British Home Front during the war, while the embossed “Tommy’s Cooker” trade mark to the lid reflects its widespread military use. This dual association makes it an excellent addition to either a British military or Home Front collection.

The cooker is complete with its original perforated flame reducer, embossed lid and lower fuel reservoir, with the manufacturer’s details still present on the label identifying G. Blackie Ltd. of Peckham, London. Complete examples retaining their original label are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly those still displaying the desirable ARP shelter reference.

Condition is good overall for its age. The cooker displays honest signs of wartime use and storage, including age-related surface rust, paint loss, scratches and general wear throughout. The original paper instruction label remains attached and is largely complete, showing expected staining and wear but retaining clear, legible text, including the desirable ARP shelter reference. The embossed markings to the lid remain crisp, and the original flame reducer is present, making this a complete, original and highly displayable example of a WW2 Blackie “Tommy’s Cooker”.
