Description
This is an original WW2 British Home Front ARP blackout lamp, complete with its original Ministry of Health issue box and hood, coded WD 3051.
Issued under Ministry of Health contracts for Civil Defence use, lamps of this type were supplied to Air Raid Precautions personnel, wardens, rescue parties and other Home Front services during the blackout years. The hooded design restricted light spill, allowing controlled illumination without compromising blackout regulations — an essential feature during air raids and night operations.
The original box is clearly marked:
LAMP A.R.P. with Hood
M.O.H. Code No. WD 3051
M.O.H. Order No. S1/52/B1
The presence of the correct Ministry of Health code firmly places this within official Civil Defence supply rather than later surplus or post-war civilian production.
The lamp itself is the correct black bakelite-bodied example with integral hood and wire carry handle. The hinge is sound, the body is free from cracks, and the internal battery compartment remains clean. The original style screw bulb is present, showing appropriate period ageing. The switch and contact areas appear undisturbed.
The original box shows honest storage wear, age-related staining and a small tear to one corner of the lid, but remains structurally solid and entirely displayable. Boxed examples are significantly less common than loose lamps and are increasingly sought after by collectors focusing on British Home Front equipment.
A classic and instantly recognisable piece of WW2 Civil Defence equipment, ideal for collectors of ARP, blackout, or broader British Home Front material.
