Description

An original British Home Front ARP shell dressing, produced for the Home Office Air Raid Precautions Department and clearly dated February 1939.

The early date is particularly interesting, placing the dressing in the final months of peace as Britain rapidly expanded its Air Raid Precautions arrangements in preparation for the expected conflict. The front is prominently printed “HOME OFFICE – AIR RAID PRECAUTIONS DEPARTMENT”, providing a direct connection with Britain’s pre-war and wartime civil defence organisation, while the large “SHELL DRESSING” designation leaves little doubt as to its intended emergency medical purpose.

Manufactured by Robinson & Sons Ltd. of Chesterfield, the outer cloth packaging retains its clearly printed original instructions, including guidance for dressing wounds and head injuries where a respirator may still need to be worn.

Importantly, this example remains unopened. The original securing thread is still present around the packet and has not been broken, meaning the dressing itself remains sealed within. This is an especially desirable feature for a disposable medical item of this type, many surviving examples having been opened or disturbed over the years.

Condition is good for its age, with expected staining, discolouration and general storage wear to the outer covering. The printed wording remains strong and easily readable, including the Home Office and ARP markings, manufacturer details and February 1939 date. The original tapes and securing thread also remain present.

A good, untouched example of an early British ARP medical item, particularly appealing for its February 1939 date, prominent Home Office markings and surviving unopened condition.
